![]() That’s their free version that’s basic add and tracker blocking. The quickest and easiest way to get started is to go to settings search for “private DNS” and enter. If not seeing ads, saving battery and having a faster experience wasn’t enough for you “Private DNS” also increases your privacy by encrypting the DNS traffic as it leaves your phone, so it can’t be observed by your Internet provider. Before Android private browsing, some apps were able to do this with a VPN profile which then also blocked ads with DNS behind the scenes… it was doing the exact same thing just in a more complicated way. Now you might be thinking that you’ve been able to add ad blocking to your web browser for a long time, and that’s true, but this does it WITHOUT installing software AND does it system wide blocking ads and tracking in most apps too. Not only does this make web browsing more enjoyable it also reduces data use (because it’s not downloading the ads) which saves battery and makes everything faster… it’s all around awesome! When you use a third party DNS that blocks ads, when your browser makes those requests, the DNS server responds that the address for the ads and trackers doesn’t exist so the browser can’t connect to them and you don’t see the ads. When you use the DNS provided by your ISP, they give your browser all the info, which is why you see ads.Ī few years ago Android added the ability to change the DNS server using “Private DNS”. ![]() Once your browser gets the address, it connects to the site, and many of the elements on the site, particularly ads and trackers from third parties also have to be looked up by DNS. Normally you use the DNS server provided by your Internet provider. When you type a website into your browser, like for example, your browser uses a DNS server to find the IP address of the website. I found a few more free options so I thought I’d post again.įor those needing a refresher, “DNS” stands for “Domain Name Server”. Some appreciated it, some mistakenly thought using a VPN was better (it’s not), others thought my post was an ad for AdGuard because that was the example I gave. Last week I wrote a post about the under appreciated Android feature the everyone should be using called “Private DNS”.
